HEI Civil is a full-service civil construction company. We offer a full range of construction services, including heavy civil highway construction, commercial, residential, oil field, site development, dams and reservoirs, parks, and golf courses.
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Project Manager with experience in civil construction to join our team at our Castle Rock, CO office.
The Senior Project Manager will work under the direction of the VP of Project Management and Estimating. The individual will be responsible for leading the Project Management team in all facets. The ideal candidate must be able to manage and coordinate multiple projects and Project Managers, as well as have the skills to make and maintain business relationships with clients.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Project & Portfolio Leadership
Provide executive-level oversight and leadership for a portfolio of heavy civil construction projects from preconstruction through final closeout.
Establish and drive project execution strategies that align with company objectives, client expectations, and profitability targets.
Lead the development and implementation of project schedules, staffing plans, procurement strategies, and resource allocation across multiple projects.
Oversee project performance metrics, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities to improve operational efficiency and financial results.
Ensure consistent application of project management standards, controls, and best practices throughout the organization.
Participate in executive planning discussions and contribute to company-wide operational and growth strategies.
Direct project recovery efforts for underperforming projects and develop corrective action plans to mitigate financial or schedule impacts.
Serve as a step in the escalation point for complex project issues, contract disputes, client concerns, and operational challenges.
Maintain executive-level relationships with owners, consultants, municipalities, developers, and key stakeholders.
Support business development efforts through client engagement, relationship management, proposal reviews, and strategic pursuit planning.
Leadership, Team Development & Organizational Growth
Provide direct leadership, guidance, and performance oversight to Lead Project Managers, project Managers and project support staff.
Conduct performance evaluations, establish development plans, and identify succession opportunities within the project management team.
Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, safety, and continuous improvement.
Work closely with the Recruiting team to facilitate recruitment, onboarding and retention efforts for project management personnel.
Mentor Project Managers in advanced project controls, contract administration, financial management, leadership, and client relationship management.
Develop future leaders by identifying high-potential employees and creating structured growth opportunities.
Promote cross-functional collaboration between operations, estimating, safety, accounting, and executive leadership teams.
Drive standardization of project management processes, reporting procedures, and operational best practices across the company.
Financial Management & Business Performance
Maintain overall accountability for the financial performance and profitability of assigned projects and project teams.
Review and approve project budgets, forecasts, cash flow projections, cost reports, and monthly financial analyses.
Lead forecasting reviews and ensure accuracy of project projections, earned revenue reporting, and profitability tracking.
Evaluate project risks and opportunities, developing mitigation strategies to maximize project outcomes.
Oversee change management processes, including contract modifications, claims preparation, delay analysis, and dispute resolution.
Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to schedule performance, cost control, labor productivity, equipment utilization, and profitability.
Collaborate with executive leadership on annual business planning, revenue forecasting, and resource planning initiatives.
Support estimating and preconstruction teams by providing constructability reviews, risk assessments, budgeting expertise, and operational input during pursuit and bid phases.
Operational Excellence & Governance
Establish and enforce project governance standards to ensure consistency, compliance, and operational efficiency across all projects.
Lead periodic project audits to verify compliance with company policies, contractual requirements, quality standards, and safety expectations.
Champion continuous improvement initiatives focused on productivity, technology adoption, reporting efficiencies, and process optimization.
Ensure all projects comply with regulatory requirements, environmental standards, contractual obligations, and company policies.
Drive implementation and utilization of project management systems, reporting tools, and operational technologies.
Review and approve major subcontract agreements, procurement strategies, and critical project expenditures.
Oversee document control processes, project reporting standards, and risk management procedures.
Client Relations & Executive Communication
Serve as the senior company representative for key clients and strategic projects.
Build and maintain long-term client relationships that support repeat business and market growth.
Lead executive project reviews with ownership groups, stakeholders, and company leadership.
Present project performance updates, financial summaries, risk assessments, and strategic recommendations to executive management.
Represent the company in negotiations involving major contracts, claims, change orders, and dispute resolution efforts.
Identify opportunities to expand client relationships and support future business opportunities.
Safety Leadership
Promote and reinforce HEI Civil's safety culture through visible leadership and accountability.
Ensure project teams consistently comply with all federal, state, local, and company safety requirements.
Participate in incident investigations, root-cause analyses, and corrective action planning as necessary.
Drive proactive risk management initiatives that reduce exposure and improve overall project safety performance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of all aspects of construction (technology, equipment, means and methods); supervision, estimating, schedules, budget, and safety.
Knowledge of field concepts, practices, and procedures.
Extensive knowledge of heavy civil construction operations, including earthwork, utilities, grading, and roadway construction.
Strong understanding of portfolio and project management, including oversight of multiple projects and Project Managers.
Advanced knowledge of construction financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, cost control, and profitability tracking.
Experience with contract administration, including change orders, claims, and dispute resolution.
Ability to develop and execute project execution strategies, including scheduling, staffing, procurement, and resource planning.
Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring and developing Project Managers and project teams.
Ability to analyze project schedules, production data, and KPIs to drive performance and efficiency.
Strong understanding of construction contracts, specifications, and regulatory compliance requirements.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Strong organizational and decision-making skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to lead risk management and project recovery efforts when needed.
Strong collaboration skills across operations, estimating, accounting, safety, and executive teams.
Strong business acumen with a focus on profitability, efficiency, and long-term client relationships.
Education and Experience:
Education: Minimum High School Diploma and/or GED.
Experience: 15+ years of experience with Civil and/or Heavy Highway Construction.
Salary: Starting at $180,000; Based on Experience.
