HEI Civil is seeking an experienced Vice President of Safety to lead and oversee the safety programs across three locations/teams. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a culture of safety, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and proactively reducing workplace risks. The VP of Safety will work closely with leadership, field teams, and regulatory bodies to uphold the highest safety standards while driving continuous improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive safety strategy aligned with company objectives and regulatory compliance.
- Oversee and manage safety programs across three locations, ensuring uniform policies and best practices.
- Conduct personal audits and inspections or supervise those performed by Division Safety Managers to identify and correct unsafe conditions or practices before they result in incidents. Ensure compliance with OSHA, MSHA, and other regulatory requirements for construction and mining safety.
- Lead a team of safety managers and coordinators, providing direction, training, and mentorship.
- Keeping Corporate Management informed of serious incidents, significant regulatory changes, trends, proposed safety strategies, and Key Performance Indicators (KPls).
- Interfaces with insurance brokers, carriers, suppliers, and other safety professionals to direct and improve effectiveness of safety standards, codes, and regulations.
- Collaborate with operations and HR teams to drive a culture of safety and accountability at all levels.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory standards and guidelines and corporate SOP’s as they relate to Construction Safety Management
- Develop and monitor safety performance metrics, analyzing trends and identifying areas for improvement.
- Oversee incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action plans.
- Lead safety training initiatives, including new hire orientations, ongoing education, and leadership training.
- Implement and maintain emergency response plans and crisis management protocols.
- Drive continuous improvement by integrating industry best practices, technology, and innovative solutions.
- Act as a liaison with regulatory agencies, ensuring timely reporting and compliance.
- Develop and manage the safety department budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
- Additional responsibilities as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and other regulatory requirements.
- Proven ability to develop and implement safety programs across multiple locations.
- Occasional travel required.
- Experience managing multi-site teams and leading organizational safety initiatives.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and drive change.
- Ability to analyze safety data and implement strategic improvements.
- Certifications preferred: CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CHST (Construction Health & Safety Technician), or equivalent.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, safety management systems, and incident reporting tools.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Business, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- 10+ years of progressive experience in construction, civil, or industrial safety leadership roles.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) – Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).
- Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) – BCSP
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Training
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Training (minimum)
- OSHA 510 – Occupational Safety and Health Standards for Construction (advanced)
- OSHA 500 – Trainer Course for the Construction Industry
- Confined Space Entry (CSE) Certification
- Fall Protection Certification
- Rigging and Signal Person Certification
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Prolonged periods of sitting.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Office-based work with varying temperatures.
- Occasional travel to job sites with fluctuations in weather.
Salary from: starting at $150,000 per year; Based on Experience
